Cellphone-use policies are stupid.

NOTICE: For the benefit of everyone, cell phones are not allowed.

First of all… the word “everyone” can’t be used in this context. Because everyone would include those who want to use cell phones. Obviously, the rule does not benefit everyone when it excludes cell phone users.

Okay, during a movie. Yes. Please turn off your damn cell phone. I don’t want to see all these glowing dots all over the theatre and I certainly don’t want to hear “smack that” again. Of course, the rule still excludes those who want to use their cell phones - so it benefits most.

But what about in a public place… say… the gym? What’s the difference if I want to use my cell phone? I was told “Cell phones disturb those working out.” Come on! People carry on obnoxiously loud conversations, they grunt, they huff and puff, and the gym music is cranked to the max. It’s not like we’re all whispering on the bench press.

And let’s get technical. When I’m on a cell phone, everyone around me only hears one person talking! Me! So you’re getting half the noise! Cell phone use should be mandatory not banned!
