Nifty Veggie Storage Solution

I recently started using the plastic (or corn) salad boxes available in the produce section. I wash and reuse the boxes replacing the salad mix with whatever vegetables I buy at the store.

First, I cut my produce to the right size. I rarely use an entire celery stalk, so cutting them up into smaller pieces won’t effect my recipes.

Next, I fit the produce as best I can in each of the boxes. Large heads of lettuce and long carrots won’t fit unless I cut them to size. So it takes longer to put groceries away. But I end up rinsing my produce right when I get home which saves time later when I cook. Notice how I cut the broccoli in half and fit a squash next to it.

After I collected about 4 boxes, I realized that I needed to remove the crisper drawers to make room for the stackable boxes. Now I love that I can see the vegetables without opening the crisper drawers.

As it turns out, these salad boxes will keep my veggies (and fruit) fresh for a week longer than the crisper drawer – sometimes longer!

Brilliant! I’ve been not using my crisper drawer as much because my food doesn’t stay good. This is a great idea! You got the containers from the grocery store??

Yeah. They’re in the produce section – but they’re all lettuce and spinach leaf containers. So, the salad comes with the container.
