I upgraded my memory on my Apple iMac today. I originally purchased the computer with 512MB of RAM.
I wanted to increase the amount of programs my computer would run at the same time without losing performance. Specifically, I wanted to be able to modify large pictures without lag time. I didn’t want to buy a new computer with a faster processor, more memory, state-of-the-art whatevers… I just wanted a little boost.
I bought 2GB of memory from memorystock.com (I think, I can’t remember). This tripled the amount of memory for my computer. I followed Apple’s installation instructions which were surprisingly easy.
Well, how does my computer perform?
I definitely notice an increase in speed. I just opened up 4 large photos and edited levels, took out red-eye, etc. No spinning wheel-of-death for small changes like that anymore (hourglass for you windows users). And I’m running Firefox, Adium, and Fireworks without any delay which was almost impossible before.
My applications still opened in their usual amount of time. Except iCal. That popped up faster than usual.
Well, I find this upgrade rather exciting. It only cost me $60 including shipping! The only hiccup was that I ordered Micron brand memory and received Crucial brand. I don’t know the difference though.
And now I have an extra 512MB Samsung memory card that I will sell to the highest bidder. What’s it worth really though? Two dollars?
