Physicists are trying to find out what the universe may have looked like in the first few moments after its creation. They built a machine/facility called RHIC (pronounced “Rick”) that smashes atoms to help them understand how the world works. Physicists developed one experiment that would create a “mini big bang.”
Fascinating no?
I first heard about RHIC months before they planned to “launch” it. No biggie – just science stuff right? Except for the tiny chance that this machine would create a black hole that could swallow our planet.
Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration… but they did expect tiny black holes to form then disappear right away. Actually, I think they called them black holes to help those of us with “lesser minds” understand what they meant when they referred to some hypothetical mathematical equation.
But… I wonder if the machine created a black hole then sucked in the Earth along with the rest of the Milky Way (or more). And we just don’t know it.
