The people who regulate domain name registration launched a new “extension” back in 2004. An extension is the end of a website address like .com, .org, .biz…. and now .pro is available.
This new extension was originally restricted to qualified professionals like lawyers, engineers and accountants. But, how can a Registrant verify a person’s credentials?
Well, they can’t. Anyone can register if they have a credit card. And after a bunch of unverified people registered their names, ICANN (the regulators) stepped in and required Registrars to force people to “self-certify” their professional status.
Yes, I really am 18. And I really live in the United States. And I’m really a lawyer.
Ha ha! It just makes me laugh. It reminds me of the time that airport security asked Roch if the walkie-talkie in his bag was a grenade. Oh… are we on the honor system? I just say that it’s not a grenade and you take my word for it?
But seriously… this .pro extension is pretty cool if you provide a professional service. Especially if you can’t come up with a suitable .com name that hasn’t been taken already.
I think the definition of professional might get diluted to include anyone who’s good at their job. Like a used car salesman would like the domain name cars.pro – pretty cool right?
