I found this strange food in the fruit section of the grocery store. I thought it looked like a tomato.
The directions posted on the basket at the store said to peel if desired. The skin is thin like a tomato, and I don’t usually peel my tomatoes. But I peeled this persimmon. I thought the center would have a big pit like an avocado. But it’s more like a banana’s center. The texture is fibrous like a mango, but finer. The flesh is bright orange. It would probably look pretty in a fruit salad.
How did it taste? Not so good. In Roch’s words, “It’s edible.” It was bland with a bad aftertaste. The texture was slippery.
I found some information about this fruit at Wikipedia. It originated from China and was introduced to the states through California.

Jenn, I want to see this fruit. I think I will look for it tomorrow. So the taste didn’t remind you at all of a tomatoe?
You’re making me laugh with your “Quaylish” tomato.
No, no, it didn’t taste like a tomato at all. I chose the squishiest one of the bunch (which I assumed was the ripest) and it felt like a tomato. But it tasted more like a bland slimy mango.
Oops…tomato
